Blowing in the wind…

Prairie smoke with their billowing heads are a spectacular sight in the prairie. They are low-growing plants not more than 9 inches tall. When they flower they have white hair-like flowers that blow in the wind giving the impression of smoke… which is most likely where their name came from. This is such a great plant that we have planted it in several of our gardens and given it to my mother-in-law for her gardens.

  1. I agree, this is a lovely plant. They have planted a wide swatch of it at the Chicago Botanic Garden, and it looks lovely used like that. I had to laugh, because I was so tickled to find it on their gravel hill prairie, and then I noticed this huge planting!
